Programs

The Coordinating Collective

Our Board of Directors legally maintains the Society. This group of women meets monthly with the staff, and many Coordinating Collective members are also involved in Centre committees.

Our Mandate

The Mandate of the Nelson & District Women’s Centre is as follows:

a) To supply and render service of a charitable and educational nature to women.
b) To establish resources for women.
c) To cooperate with other organizations whether incorporated or not, which have objects similar, in whole or in part, to the objects of the Society.
d) To operate as a charitable organization to administer and employ its property, assets, and rights for the purpose of promoting, or aiding in the promotion of the welfare of all women in need of help.
e) To receive, acquire, and hold gifts, donations, legacies, and devices.

Donations

Donations are important to the Women’s Centre as we receive minimal funding.  We must fundraise for extra funds in order to raise enough money to operate annually.  If you would like to organize an event or make a donation to the Women’s Centre please contact Tamara at tabram@telus.net  or phone the Women’s Centre at 250-352-9916.  Very soon you will be able to donate on line.  We are currently updating the capacity of our website and look forward to sharing it with you in the months to come.  If you would like to donate clothing for the free store and food donations you may deliver them to the Centre. Please call the drop-in line to make arrangements.  Currently  Kootenay Co-op Bakery and Silverking Tofu donate on Tuesdays, and Endless Harvest donates organic greens on Wednesdays.

Membership

Membership to the Centre can be achieved in two different ways. Either volunteer 4 hours of your time or pay $15-30 (sliding scale).  Membership is due each September.  You may renew your membership at the AGM each year or drop by the Women’s Centre.  A reminder will be sent out in our newsletter to renew.  Please consider joining as a member — we need you!

Volunteers

The Centre depends on volunteers for running the drop-in, special events planning, and fundraising. Our Volunteer Coordinator leads an intensive volunteer training twice a year. Please call 352-9916 for more information.

Library

We have the largest feminist library outside of the lower mainland; there are 2500 books in total. Membership in the Association gives you access to this fantastic selection of feminist books and videos.

Garden

You are welcome to come and participate in our garden program and harvest.  We are currently preparing the yard and soil for planting and would love to have your help.  Come and learn new skills, meet new people and benefit in the healthy harvest over the summer.  Drop by the Centre or call us to learn how you can get involved.
