The Nelson and District Women’s Centre has an opening for an Executive Director. This is a 30 hour temporary position of one year to cover a maternity leave. The Executive Director will work with the Board and staff to perform related duties. The Nelson and District Women’s Centre is a feminist organization that has been in operation since 1972. Our aim is to create healthy community through providing support for women and dismantling gender inequality.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all programs, services, and activities approved under a strategic planning process.
- Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization, including human resource needs
- Create and nourish relationships with funding, potential funding organizations, and donors
- Maintain full awareness and ensure accuracy of the complete financial, statistical, and accounting records of the organization
- Represent organization to community and implement communications strategy
Desirable skills and experience:
- Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit organizations.
- Demonstrated ability in fund development, including grant acquisition and donor relations.
- Knowledge of human resources, project and financial management.
- Demonstrated competence in building relationships, creative thinking, fostering teamwork and collaboration, strategic thinking, ethical behaviour, and effective communication.
- Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization.
- Understanding of, and commitment to, feminism.
- 3 or more years of progressive management experience in a non-profit organization.
This position will commence in July. This is a temporary employee position with a rate of pay is $20 per hour, plus 1.15% medical benefits. Hours are mostly day time, and may include Saturdays, with occasional evening hours for meetings and events.

The Nelson and District Women’s Centre has an opening for a Program Coordinator. This is a permanent position of 18 to 23 hours per week. The Program Coordinator will work with the Executive Director and the Board to perform related duties. The Nelson and District Women’s Centre is a feminist organization that has been in operation since 1972. Our aim is to create healthy community through providing support for women and dismantling gender inequality.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Recruit, train, and support Women’s Centre volunteers.
- Create a safe and welcoming space in the drop-in.
- Provide support, counseling and referrals to women who utilize the drop-in.
- Maintain Women’s Centre space, including free store and food shelf.
- Assist in planning of annual community events.
- Report monthly to the Board of Directors.
- Attend meetings and represent the Women’s Centre in the community.
- Plan special events and nourish relationships with donors
Desirable skills and experience:
- Excellent communication skills and “people skills”.
- Well-organized and self-directed.
- Counselling skills and experience.
- Knowledge of services available in the community.
- Experience managing volunteers.
- Knowledge of cycles of domestic violence and experience working with women fleeing violent relationships.
- Facilitation skills and experience.
- Access to a vehicle.
- Understanding of feminism and the Women’s Centre an asset.
