My Grandmother’s Kitchen and Community Garden

My Grandmother’s Kitchen and Community Garden: Food Security and Equity Project

My Grandmother’s Kitchen is an inter-generational community kitchen program that brings together women and gender diverse individuals of all ages and backgrounds who are united by their love of food and their desire to learn how to cook healthy, budget-friendly meals.

Folks come into our kitchen to plan, prepare and share meals, acquire and exchange food skills, and build connections. With this project we seek to address two prevalent issues in our area that impact health and well-being: food security and social inclusion. The program hosts classes on topics such as: vegan eating, fermentation, canning and drying foods, container gardening and composting, cooking with affordable, healthy lentils or tofu, and many more – all of which support self-sufficiency and healthy eating.

Each spring the Women’s Centre starts planning its garden and carries on until late fall, when we harvest the vegetables, herbs, and fruit in the garden. All women and gender diverse individuals are invited to participate, to volunteer, learn, contribute, apply to teach a workshop and offer support to each other.

Assisting in the garden offers the following opportunities:

      • Learning how to cultivate, plant, tend and harvest crops
      • Providing nutritious food to families
      • Networking with others
      • Learning about food security, sovereignty, and equity
      • Learning about food storage and food preservation

      • Learning about permaculture and regenerative and sustainable food production
