The government of Canada recently passed legislation to make September 30 a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an important step in the reconciliation process. It provides an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families, and communities.
This date coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which began to honour the healing journey of residential school survivors. The orange shirt represents the story of young Phyllis Webstad who was given a new orange shirt by her grandmother for the first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. Sadly, Phyllis never wore her orange shirt proudly as it was taken away along with her other personal belongings.
On September 30, 2021, the Nelson & District Women’s Centre will be closed. As our staff and volunteers take time to reflect and show our own respect, we encourage all women who access our Centre to honour the first annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in your own thoughtful and respectful manner.
Thank you for supporting this important day.
